CASE STUDY
TravelWallet Mobile App
With the pervasiveness of online booking platforms, travelers can often feel overwhelmed by the volume of reservation details scattered across various confirmation emails, booking websites, and mobile apps.

The Challenge

How might we design a system that streamlines the process of reservation management by providing users with a centralized platform to store, access, and organize all their travel reservations seamlessly?

Defining the User
My target audience were travelers who fly frequently for both business and pleasure. They have complicated itineraries, book their arrangements online, and rely on their mobile phones throughout the travel process.
Uncovering Key Features Through User Interviews
I recruited five participants for 45-minute moderated interviews. From these discussions, I created notes and synthesized the data, uncovering insights that suggested the inclusion of the following features:
  • Users need to be assured that confirmations have been uploaded into the app with the correct information.
  • The app should automatically generate a schedule, surfacing confirmations based on the current stage of the trip.
  • Confirmations should be accessible both online and offline, ensuring users can access them without an internet connection and over the internet if their smartphone is lost or damaged.
  • The app should connect to a corporate reimbursement system for business travelers and allow the sharing of itineraries with fellow travelers.

Sketches and Ideation: Shaping the Calendar Page
During the ideation phase, I employed techniques such as Lightning Rounds and Crazy 8s to generate a wide range of ideas quickly. These exercises were instrumental in establishing the direction for the calendar page, which ultimately became the main interface of the app. Through rapid sketching and brainstorming, I  identified key features and design elements that would make the calendar page intuitive and user-friendly, ensuring it met the needs of our target audience.
Ensuring Trust in App Data: User Journey Mapping and Solution Implementation
I began by mapping out the user journey through detailed flows. A key insight from my user interviews revealed that travelers were skeptical about the accuracy of the information uploaded to the app. To address this, I needed a reliable method of importing data that would reassure users of its correctness. The solution was to implement a feature that allowed users to confirm and correct the imported details, ensuring the information was accurate and trustworthy.
Optimizing Entry Points: Designing User Interactions and Screen Details
Sketches and wireframes helped refine the interactions and screen details of the app. It became evident that users would access the app through three main entry points: the app icon on the home screen, email uploads, and notifications on the phone's home screen. Notifications sent to the homescreen would make information easily accessible by surfacing crucial information based on the users geographic location and time.
Streamlining Data Import: Simplifying the User Experience Based on Feedback
A prototype was tested with three users recruited from my discovery interview participants. Initial feedback indicated that the process of importing, confirming, and correcting information was too complicated and involved too many steps. To address this, I researched how competitors and similar apps handled email information imports. I replaced the cumbersome process with a simpler solution that required users to forward their confirmation emails to the app, allowing them to easily check for errors.

Crafting a Sophisticated Visual Design Inspired by Swiss Modernism
The visual design process began with the creation of a brand persona and mood board, targeting sophisticated users. Drawing inspiration from Swiss modernist design pioneer Josef Müller-Brockmann, the app features a typographic-driven, clean, and functional aesthetic. This approach allows photography to be used sparingly yet with significant impact.
TravelWallet: The Smart Travel Organizer
TravelWallet is a geographically aware mobile app that consolidates and organizes users' travel confirmations and arrangements into an easy-to-use schedule. As users move through different stages of their journey, the app surfaces relevant booking information, ensuring it's easily accessible while tucking away non-urgent details that remain available if needed.

Key features include:
  • Chronologically consolidating and organizing travel confirmations.
  • Surfacing and prompting information based on calendars and geographic location.
  • Connecting and sharing travel information with other users.
  • Easy forward confirmations from email directly into app.
