Balance Sheet Redesign
The Balance Sheet application is a highly utilized tool for Financial Advisors to quickly glance at client account balances. Two previous redesigns aimed at ADA compliance resulted in excessive white space, leading to extensive scrolling and user dissatisfaction.
The Challenge
How might we redesign the Balance Sheet application to accommodate both ADA accessibility requirements and the users' desire for a more condensed display of information?
In order to address these issues, the team devised a multi-faceted approach, developing three distinct versions of the Balance Sheet. Upon opening the app for the first time users would be presented with an ADA compliant version with generous white space. Users who wanted a more information dense view, could select between a Condensed version or Extra Condensed version and set it as their default.
Audit Uncovers, Fixes ADA Compliance Issues
To start, an audit was conducted of the most recent redesign, indicating where it failed at ADA compliance. These failures were brought to compliance, establishing a baseline default version.
In contrast to the ADA Compliant Default version, the Condensed version focused on reducing the excessive white space by primarily modifying the table and page spacing. The adjustments were limited to CSS changes, minimizing the development effort required. This version increased the visible data by 20%, providing a more compact and efficient view. The Extra Condensed version went further by modifying component and icon sizing, requiring the creation of a new set of components. The result was a 30% increase in visible data compared to the ADA Default version, bringing it back in line with the data density of the original pre-redesigned screen.
